Church Finance Manager
Offline-First Church Finance Android App
An offline-first Android app that helps churches record income and expenses, manage gatherings, monitor balances, and export clear financial reports.
Foundation
Project overview
Church Finance Manager is an offline-first Android application designed to help churches and faith-based organizations organize their day-to-day financial records from a mobile device. It provides a structured workspace for recording income, tracking expenses, managing church gatherings, monitoring balances, and preparing financial reports.
The application replaces fragmented paper records and difficult-to-maintain spreadsheets with a clear mobile workflow. Church administrators can categorize transactions, connect financial entries to gatherings, filter records by reporting period, review activity history, and export information in PDF, CSV, and Excel-compatible formats.
Built by RayCodeStar using Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and Room Database, the app stores its operational data locally on the Android device. This offline-first approach enables core financial recording without requiring continuous internet access or an external cloud database.
The project demonstrates how practical mobile technology can support better record organization, clearer financial visibility, and more consistent reporting for churches and nonprofit organizations. Its modular architecture also provides a foundation for future improvements such as authenticated user accounts, encrypted storage, cloud synchronization, automated backups, and multi-device access.
Context
The challenge
Many churches manage offerings, tithes, donations, expenses, and event-related finances using paper books or disconnected spreadsheets. These processes can make it difficult to maintain consistent records, understand the current financial position, recover deleted information, or prepare reports when they are needed.
The identified challenges included:
- Creating a simple financial workflow suitable for non-technical church administrators.
- Organizing income and expenses using consistent categories.
- Connecting transactions to services, meetings, and other church gatherings.
- Providing useful summaries without requiring manual calculations.
- Supporting financial recording in environments with unreliable internet access.
- Making financial information portable through commonly used export formats.
- Designing an interface that remains clear despite the number of financial workflows involved.
- Creating a technical foundation that can support future cloud and multi-user capabilities.
Direction
Project goals
- Develop a practical Android finance application for churches and faith-based organizations.
- Provide clear workflows for recording church income and expenses.
- Enable administrators to organize services, meetings, and other gatherings.
- Calculate income, expenses, and current balances automatically.
- Support reporting across predefined and custom date ranges.
- Allow churches to configure categories, currency, and organizational information.
- Make core functionality available without an internet connection.
- Support PDF, CSV, and Excel-compatible financial exports.
- Maintain activity history and recover recently deleted records.
- Prepare the application for future security, backup, and cloud synchronization improvements.
Response
The RayCodeStar solution
RayCodeStar designed and developed a native Android application around the practical financial workflows of churches and nonprofit organizations.
The solution combines a dashboard, gathering management, transaction recording, reporting, category administration, and organizational settings within one consistent mobile interface. Income and expense records are automatically reflected in financial summaries, reducing the need for administrators to calculate totals manually.
An offline-first Room Database stores records locally on the device, allowing the app’s core capabilities to work without a remote server or continuous internet connection. Kotlin coroutines, ViewModel state management, and Jetpack Compose provide a responsive and maintainable application structure.
RayCodeStar also implemented financial exports in PDF, CSV, and Excel-compatible formats, giving administrators practical ways to share, archive, and review their records outside the application.
The final release was compiled, tested, signed with a dedicated application certificate, and packaged as an installable Android APK.
Execution
Development approach
The application followed a native Android build and release process:
- The Kotlin and Jetpack Compose codebase was reviewed for configuration, database connections, and exposed credentials.
- Automated unit tests were run to validate important application logic.
- Android release lint and Gradle release-build checks were completed.
- A dedicated 4096-bit RSA signing certificate was generated for the application.
- The release APK was signed and verified using Android’s APK Signature Scheme v2.
- Package name, version, supported Android API level, signature, and checksum were verified.
- The APK was prepared for direct HTTPS download from the RayCodeStar project case study.
- Future releases will increment the application version and use the same private signing certificate so existing installations can be updated.
Impact
Project outcomes
- Delivered a working native Android finance-management application.
- Combined church income, expenses, gatherings, reports, and settings in one mobile workspace.
- Enabled offline financial recording without a required cloud service.
- Automated financial totals and balance calculations.
- Introduced consistent transaction and category structures.
- Provided portable PDF, CSV, and Excel-compatible exports.
- Added recoverable deletion and activity-history capabilities.
- Produced a signed APK suitable for portfolio demonstrations and controlled testing.
- Established a modular foundation for future cloud synchronization, authentication, encrypted storage, and multi-user access.
Avoid claiming percentage improvements, cost savings, or active church adoption until those results have been measured.
